ʻUlīʻulī Heke
‘Ulī‘ulī Heke is an ‘ulī‘ulī with a feather top.
‘Ulī‘ulī are also fashioned with sewn feathers of many different colors. Used by the hula ‘olapa as they perform their hula ‘ulī‘ulī. Often played as a single implement or in pairs.
In this ulī‘ulī workshop, you will hand-sew natural rooster feather hackle for the heke, then it will be attached to the la‘amia gourd.
After you have completed your ʻulīʻulī, you will learn a traditional hula entitled "Ula No Weo," a hula noho accompanied with our implement. Performed as a hula noho, a sitting position of dancing, while chanting accompanied with your implement.
You will be making a single ‘ulī‘ulī in this workshop.
