Kupeʻe Lima:
Raffia Kupeʻe

Participants will learn the fundamental techniques of using raffia, a versatile and sustainable material inspired by the traditional lauhala.

In this session, you’ll create your own raffia kūpeʻe—a beautiful, handwoven adornment traditionally worn around the wrists or ankles. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the kūpeʻe holds cultural significance and is often used in hula and special ceremonies.

All materials will be provided. No prior lei-making experience is necessary.
 

Recommended Age: 13 and older
Duration: 2 hours
Additional Supply Fee: $25

Class size limit: 20 participants (per session)

  • Workshop Session 4 | Saturday, 11:15 PM - 1:15 PM

  • Workshop Session 5 | Saturday, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Kumu Pili was born and raised in Hilo, Hawai’i. She started teaching hula in Ventura, California in 1988. She has now taught in Camarillo, California for 35 years and Grass Valley, California for 20 years. She is Kumu Hula of Ka Hale Hula O Pilialohaokalani O Hilo and a member of the Kumu Hula Association of Southern California - Kūlia I Ka Punawai.
