Nani Wale Kuʻu ʻIke (Traditional Sitting Hula)
This mele hula honors Emalani Kaleleonālani, consort wife of King Kamehameha IV, also known
as Alexander Liholiho. Emalaniʻs royal lineage connects to the enchanting island of Kauaʻi. This
hula noho (or dance sitting on knees) will be taught using one ʻulīʻulī (feathered gourd).

 

Important Notes:

  • Please bring one (1) ʻulīʻulī to this session.

  • Participants in this workshop will need to be able to sit and chant for the entire song.

 

For all hula workshops, participants are expected to wear comfortable attire that allows for ease of movement and is culturally respectful. Additionally, participants should wear a pāʻū or a sarong/pareau suitable for hula practice.

Recommended for ages 8 and older.

Duration: 2 Hours

Class size limit: 30 participants

Shane “Maka” Herrod enjoys teaching, dancing, choreography, composing and playing music. He has studied with ‘Iwalani Tseu, John Na’one, Leimomi Ho, Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza, Nathan Kalama, and Lani Kalama and completed the traditional rituals of ‘ūniki under Puna Kalama-Dawson.
 
Maka established Nā Hui O Kamakaokalani in 1992, a hālau hula that focuses on perpetuating the gift of dance, language, music, stories of old and new, the importance of Hawaiian values, and the rich history of Hawai`i. In 1996, he and three Kaua`i kumu hula created Hui O Kalamaola; four hālau combined to fulfill the beautiful mana’o of “Aloha kekahi I kekahi.”
 
His hālau has participated in various festivals, events, and hula competitions throughout Hawai`i, the Continent, and Japan. Maka is the Executive Director of the Mālie Foundation, which offers workshops, lectures, and events annually on Kaua`i.  He is also responsible for the Kaua’i Mokihana Festivals, which is one of the longest-running seven-day Hawaiian events held each year in September.
